David Shrigley’s work is best known for its child-like imagery and ironic tone. Taking important socio-political issues and putting them into comic drawings with satirised figurines defines his art style. In this work, he depicts a metaphor, both literary and visual, of taking the step forward, towards the top of your goal. Characteristic of his style, the simple drawing of a man standing in front of a staircase is accompanied by a short, hand-rendered phrase. Here, an affirmative, motivational message gives the viewer the courage one might’ve been lacking.
