The Bee

Joana Schneider
Post-consumer fishing rope
230 x 195 x 50 cm
Schneider’s work is a result of her material-based approach towards spacious installations and sculptural spaces. Her work pays tribute to labour-intensive techniques of Dutch craft traditions. Inspired by the netmaking and the fisheries sector, Schneider’s work ‘The Bee’ tells about the story of worker bees. A bee colony consists of approximately 90% female worker bees who carry out all essential jobs to sustain a beehive. As a fellow craftsman, the artist relates to the hard-working lifestyle of the insects. This way, she touches upon an important topic of underrepresentation and undermining of the historical and cultural value of female craftsmen.
