Shooting Back #11

(2011)

Hester Scheurwater
Archival pigment print on Hahnemühle paper
90 x 67 cm

Hester Scheurwater is known for her exploration of female sexuality in the media. Predominantly focusing on performance photography, she reflects upon and judges the image the media forces onto women. For Scheurwater, the social understanding of female sexuality is unrealistic and unattainable. In her “Shooting Back” series, the sexually-charged mirror self-portraits are shocking at first. The work ‘Shooting Back #11’ playfully questions the boundary between the model and the artist, becoming both. Similarly, the viewer questions whether the mise-en-scène is staged or spontaneous. This way, she reclaims her sexuality and fights the standards imposed by media.
