Individual
(2012)

Photography
120 x 100 cm
‘Individual’ is a part of Van Veluw’s Origin of the Beginning series. Here, the artist draws upon and deconstructs the concept of family and his own childhood memories. Each photograph in the series captures the life-sized installation of three rooms made of tens of thousands of wooden blocks and slats without any digital manipulation. In ‘Individual’, Van Veluw himself poses in a handmade wooden costume. On the one hand, these series are deeply personal self-portraits, reflecting upon the artist’s youth and family. On the other hand, the series embodies Van Veluw’s intricate focus on texture, pattern, and materiality in his works. The central themes in ‘Individual’ are the feeling of loneliness, horror vacui, and claustrophobia.
