Thomas Pihl

Thomas Pihl is a Norwegian artist born in Bergen in 1964. One of the most influential Norwegian artists of his generation, he depicts unique colors by adding and mixing countless layers of paint on canvas. His works are known for their monochromatic approach, often compared to Mark Rothko. Fascinated by the overload of visual information that contemporary society experiences, he uses minimalistic visual language to communicate with his viewer. Smooth at first glance, the canvas steadily unravels the devil in the details: flaws and scratches, color gradients, drawing the viewer in. After graduating from several art academies in New York and Oslo, Pihl’s works have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions across Europe and the United States. Apart from his artistic career, he works as an Associate Professor at the Art Academy’s Institute for Contemporary Art in Bergen.
