Robin Speijer
Robin Speijer is a Dutch artist born in 1997 and graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2019. She is mostly known for the illustration of different forms of fabric on canvas with an emphasis on its naturally occurring folds. Through close-up depiction, Speijer removes the original context of the fabric, stripping its existence bare. This way, she explores the intersection between figuration and abstraction. The soft feeling of the fabrics is juxtaposed by the painterly qualities that show, in reality, a flat surface. As Youri Guepin argues, it feels as though Speijer wants to share the duality of the material: the intimacy of soft fabrics that surround us, and the layers of paint on canvas representing this. Her works are exhibited widely across the Netherlands both in public and private institutions.
