Joost Vandebrug

Joost Vandebrug is a multidisciplinary Dutch artist born in 1982. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and is known for his exploration of time, memory, and the boundaries of traditional photography. Vandebrug’s work spans photography, video, installation, and filmmaking, often using historical photographic techniques such as pigment transfers, silver-gelatin prints, and hand-made Washi paper. His style is often compared to the Xerox and Assemblage movements. However, his intricately detailed works are not bound by the sense of immediacy. His compositions are marked by a sensitivity to time, capturing moments that transcend linearity and evoke a constantly shifting sense of presence. Before his fine art practice, Vandebrug worked as a commercial photographer, shooting global campaigns for clients like Nike and Superdry, and editorials for i-D and L'uomo Vogue. His documentary work, which follows a community living under the streets of Bucharest, has garnered international acclaim and has been featured in over 50 film festivals worldwide.
