Hester Scheurwater
Hester Scherwater is a Dutch artist born in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht in 1971. Currently residing in the Netherlands, she studied Monumental Art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the Hague. Primarily working with performance photography, she explores and criticizes the role of a woman as a sex object. Her mirror self-portraits reflect on the unattainable standards of sexuality that society forces onto women through media. By spreading her works in public spaces, Scherwater aims to reclaim the said public space and control of female sexuality. Her works deeply resonate with international feminist art and were exhibited in many worldwide famous feminist art events, including the Blanton Museum of Art (USA) and the Brooklyn Museum.
