Bobbi Essers
Bobbi Essers is a Dutch contemporary artist born in 2000 in Enschede, the Netherlands. Shortly after graduating from Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht in 2022, she won the Buning Brongers Prize for Painting. Her works emerge from a deep-rooted fascination for the power of stories of adventure and friendship. Her paintings capture the fleeting moments of her closely-knit friend group in their early twenties. The subject matter combines multiple images into life-sized compositions of overlapping figures. The exclusion of faces and meticulous attention to the detail of depicted clothing blurs the lines between traditional gender identities. Her art evokes a subtle feeling of voyeurism in the viewer, providing a glance into intimate, candid memories. In 2023, Artsy recognized Essers as one of the top 10 emerging painters from the 2000s. Her works have been exhibited in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht, Marian Cramer Projects in Los Angeles, and Better Go South Gallery in Berlin.
