Something from Nothing

(2020)

David Shrigley
Acrylic on paper
75 x 56 cm

Classical for his style, Shrigley emphasizes on child-like and simple imagery for his work. Opting for an ironic, almost conflicting hand-rendered sentence stating the emergence of “something” from “nothing.” The absurdity of such statement leaves the interpretation up to the viewer. Shrigley underlines the contradictory nature of the written text with opposing colours - black and white to illustrate the meaning of it in an artistic manner. The distribution of colour supports the viewer to make sense of the absurdity displayed and grasp the core idea of the artwork.
