Untitled' A Bouquet of Brushes

(2021)

David Roth
Photograph, pigment print on baryta paper mounted on dibond
79 x 59 cm

The Austrian artist David Roth puts great emphasis on the origins and processes of an art piece. This manifests itself in his technique of using flowers as brushes challenging the traditional distribution of artistic value. In his piece “A Bouquet of Brushes” Roth pays tribute to his valuable tools by authentically placing the flower bouquets, visibly exhausted from their usage, yet beautifully displaying the colours used, in a bucket. The photography captures both, the fragility and strength of the flowers as brushes, reminding of a modern still life and simultaneously links to Realism through the display of working tools. The photograph idyllically captures the resting flowers, bathing in the fading sun while transmitting a calm, yet exhausted feeling of peace.
