‘Birds Fly Back’ is a short documentary video installation, Düyü’s graduation project for Gerrit Rietveld Academy. Exhibited on two screens, the installation envelops the viewer into the narrative. Depicting children playing and running through the Kurdish mountainous landscape, the film explores the child’s perspective, purity, and appreciation of the little moments. The artist’s personal connection to her Kurdish roots creates an intimate touch. As a continuation of the thesis, which explored the role and influence of the mountains on Kurdish cinema, Düyü illustrates the grand character of the landscape. The film was selected for the Best of Graduates show at Ron Mandos Gallery in 2022, where it won the Lakeside Collection Award. It was presented at the Eye Filmmuseum, and selected for the Nederlands Film Festival Student Competition, where it won the Dutch Film Fund Wildcard.
